  1. NetMinder® Ethernet 4.0 Demonstration Read Me

  4. This demonstration copy of NetMinder Ethernet has certain limitations
  5. that are not present in the full application:
  6.  
  7. • This demonstration only allows data collection for one minute intervals. 
  8. At the end of each minute a message will alert you that time has expired. 
  9. To begin collecting packets again, click the Collect button.
  10.  
  11. • This demonstration can only be launched ten times.
  12.  
  13. • You cannot Save, Print or Export captured data.

  66. Important note about network services:
  67.  
  68. NetMinder Ethernet needs full access to your Macintosh's Ethernet interface
  69. in order to capture packets from the network.  Before running the demo, you
  70. should disconnect from any mail servers and file servers.  Also, if you are
  71. using MacTCP, MacIPX, LAT, TSSnet, etc. for connection to non-AppleTalk
  72. devices, you need to remove these files from your Control Panels folder and
  73. restart your Macintosh prior to collecting packets with NetMinder Ethernet.
  74. If you have a second Ethernet interface installed in your Macintosh (such as
  75. a Nubus card), you can avoid disconnecting from network services and removing
  76. applications from your Control Panels folder. To ask NetMinder Ethernet to use
  77. the second interface for collection, start-up NetMinder Ethernet and ignore the
  78. warnings about disabling network services.  Then use "Choose Ethernet" under
  79. the "Options" menu to select the second interface.

  82. PCMCIA/Ethernet interface users:

  84. NetMinder Ethernet 4.0 adds support for five PCMCIA Ethernet 
  85. adaptors. For these cards to work properly you will most likely
  86. need to load the most current drivers onto your Macintoshes.

  122. SCSI/Ethernet interface users:
  123.  
  124. NetMinder Ethernet supports several SCSI/Ethernet interfaces. These
  125. include:  Asanté EN/SC and Mini EN/SC;  Compatible Systems Ether+;
  126. Dayna SCSI/Link and Pocket SCSI/Link, Farallon EtherMac SCSI,
  127. Focus/NuvoTech NuvoLink II; Sonic Systems microSCSI; and TechWorks
  128. Ethernet SC.   Below are some notes about NetMinder Ethernet support
  129. for these SCSI/Ethernet products:
  130.  
  131. •  The Compatible Systems Ether+, the Focus NuvoLink SC, and the
  132. TechWorks Ethernet SC are not capable of collecting error packets.
  133.  
  134. •  Version 1.42 or higher of the software driver and version 0.1u or higher
  135. of the PROM are required for the Compatible Systems Ether+, the Focus
  136. NuvoLink SC, and the TechWorks Ethernet SC in order for them to work
  137. with NetMinder Ethernet.
  138.  
  139. •  Version 5.2 or higher of the software driver and version D4 or later
  140. of the hardware are required for the Asanté EN/SC in order for it to work
  141. with NetMinder Ethernet.
  142.  
  143. •  When using NetMinder Ethernet with a SCSI/Ethernet device, you should
  144. first use your Network Control Panel to select a non-SCSI network interface
  145. icon (such as Built In LocalTalk).  Then use NetMinder Ethernet's Choose
  146. Ethernet command from the Options menu to select the SCSI interface. 
  147. (If you use the Asanté EN/SC or Mini EN/SC SCSI/Ethernet device, you can
  148. keep the SCSI interface icon selected in the Network Control Panel.)

  151. Real time packet display note:
  152.  
  153. The NetMinder Ethernet demo ships, by default, with the option to display
  154. Ethernet headers in real-time.  As noted in the User's Manual, this option
  155. can affect NetMinder Ethernet's ability to collect all packets on a busy
  156. network.  If your network is busy and capturing all packets is of the highest
  157. priority, please either uncheck the "Display headers during collection" option
  158. in the Data Collection options dialog or check the "High speed display" option
  159. in the Display options dialog.

  162. Quadra built-in Ethernet interface:

  164. NetMinder Ethernet cannot reenable the Ethernet driver on interfaces using
  165. the SONIC chipset (used mainly in the built-in Ethernet in Quadra series
  166. Macintosh computers). If you wish to access the Ethernet (for instance, to
  167. print) after collecting packets on that particular Ethernet interface, you will
  168. need to restart your machine. This can be obviated by installing two Ethernet
  169. interfaces in your machine or by maintaining a separate LocalTalk drop to
  170. your network for printing and other network services.
